RECAP: Sea Dogs prospects entertain fans in 5-0 triumph of Titan


SAINT JOHN - The Saint John Sea Dogs kicked off the 2015-16 pre-season schedule with a convincing 5-0 win over the Acadie-Bathurst Titan. It was an entertaining contest for the Sea Dogs fans as they got a glimpse into the future of the organization including there first taste of Joe Veleno, the teams 2015 first round pick.

Julien Tessier opened the scoring 13 minutes into the game beating Daniel Vautour with a quick wrist shot. 2015 draft picks Ian Smallwood and Matthew O'Leary had helpers.

Four minutes later Quispamsis native Will Kelly banged home a rebound to extend the lead to 2-0. Thomas Morin got on the scoresheet with an assist while Ian Smallwood added his second assist of the night.

The lead was pushed to 3-0 midway through the second frame when Peter Drohan tipped a Mitchell Rankin point shot past Tanner Somers. Ben Reid, a native of Quispamsis, was also given an assist on the goal.

Under two minutes into the third period, Joe Veleno struck the back of the net with a powerful wrist shot from the slot to make it a 4-0 advantage. Alex Kealey had the lone helper.

Ian Smallwood rounded out the scoring with six minutes to play on a feed from Veleno. Will Kelly grabbed the other assist.


Other Notes
  • Alex Bishop and Alex D'Orio combined for a 34 save shutout.
  • Will Kelly dropped the gloves against Mike Tropea while Kyle Ward and Duncan McKie also engaged in some fisticuffs. The two tilts were within 20 seconds of each other early in the third.
  • The fans were buzzing every time Joe Veleno had the puck on his stick.
  • Both local boys Will Kelly and Ben Reid got on the scoresheet in front of their family and friends.
  • Returning players Julien Tessier and Matt Green were in the lineup.
  • Tessier wore an A on his sweater along with Alex Kealey and Kyle Ward while Matt Green wore the C.

Next Game
Saint John returns to action Saturday in Pownal, PEI against the Charlottetown Islanders. Puck drops at 4pm atlantic time.
