RECAP: Sea Dogs use Five-Goal Second Period to Mawl Wildcats

By: Blair Cameron | HH Staff

SAINT JOHN - For the second time in as many nights the Saint John Sea Dogs over whelmed there opponent in very convincing fashion.

The Sea Dogs started well right from the opening face off outshooting the Wildcats by a 5-0 margin early on. The Wildcats then put on a little bit of pressure but the Dogs showed that they won't scare easy.

The boys in blue opened the scoring just 2:56 into the opening game when Matthew Highmore picked a spot behind Moncton netminder Sebastian Dupre sending the crowd of 3,614 to there feet. The goal was assisted by Matt Green and Kyle Ward.

However, Moncton silenced the hometown crowd at 17:13 when Zack MacEwen slid one past Marc-Antoine Turcotte to even the score at 1-1 in what would prove to be the only time Moncton didn't trail in the game.

The first period would end in a 1-1 tie but that didn't last long. The first intermission would prove to be the calm before the Sea Dogs second period storm.

Much like the first period, the second period was a dominant one for Saint John as they scored five goals on just nine shots. The home team would regain there lead at 3:37 when Matt Green found the back of the net with the lone assist going to Oliver Felixson.

Just under six minutes later with Benji Curtis serving a tripping penalty for Moncton, the Sea Dogs would double their lead when the birthday boy Adam Marsh potted his third goal in the past two games at 9:18. The convincing style of play didn't stop there as Samuel Dove-McFalls scored the eventual game winner at 12:16 with the assist going to second-year forward Bokondji Imama.

The Sea Dogs would stretch there lead to 5-1 just under a minute later at 13:03 when the exceptional Joe Veleno scored his second of the 2015 pre-season.

The parade to the back of the net continued for Saint John when they took a commanding 6-1 lead on Matthew Highmores second goal of the evening and third of the pre-season at 19:50 of the second period.

The Wildcats would start to claw back into the game in the third period when Cameron Askew found the back of Alex Bishops net at 5:45, however the damage was already done.

Moncton would make the dark tunnel a bit brighter eight minutes into the 3rd period when Matt Klebanskyj would solve Bishop for the second time in under three minutes. The unassisted marker would end the scoring part of the evening for the Hub City team.

The Sea Dogs would put the seventh dagger into the heart of the untamed Wildcats at 15:56 of the final frame when Dan Del Paggio sent an odd one past Wildcats goaltender Zack Fortin. Shots on goal would end 38-34 for the visitors, and that was the only part of the score sheet Moncton would have any type of lead in.

Saint Johns pre-season record will improve to 3-1-0 while Moncton suffers there first loss and slide to 2-1-0.

The Sea Dogs look to tame the Wildcats again next Thursday night in the final home pre-season contest for Saint John. Tickets are available now at the Harbour Station box office for one 10 dollars, or 5 dollars if you're a season ticket holder.

D'Orio, Pare reassigned; Roster Sits at 25

SAINT JOHN - The Saint John Sea Dogs have trimmed their roster by two players, General Manager Darrell Young announced today. Forward Cedric Pare and goaltender Alex D'Orio were reassigned to their respective teams.

Both players were selected in the first round of this year's Quebec Major Junior Hockey league draft by Saint John.

"We were extremely pleased with the performances of both Alex and Cedric in our training camp this year," Young said in a press release. "These moves are designed to give them a chance to play a lot, and be ready to become big parts of our future here in Saint John."

D'Orio, a 6-foot-2, 198 pound goaltender will rejoin the Magog Cantonniers after suiting in 23 games with the team last season. In his 2014-15 campaign, the Sherbrooke, Quebec native recorded a 2.30 goals against average with a .916 save percentage. He was the second netminder taken in the 2015 QMJHL Draft.

Pare, a native of Levis, Quebec will join the Commandeurs de Levis for a second season. Last season with the Commandeurs, the 16-year-old registered six goals and seven assists in 41 games. Many were surprised when Saint John used the 10th overall pick on the forward who was ranked in the second round, but Pare proved himself to the Sea Dogs staff and fans at this year's training camp.

Young said many times that these players will be a big part of the organization's future, and they've certainly made there case over the past two weeks.

The training camp roster now sits at 25 players: two goalies, eight defencemen and 15 forwards. Include defenceman Jakub Zboril, who is expected to return the team in September after training camp with the Boston Bruins.

Saint John is on the road in Bathurst tomorrow night, Friday, to battle the Titan in pre-season action. Several returning players are expected to be in the lineup and tickets are free for the game if you're thinking of making the trip up.
